Review: Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles “Cloak and Swaggart; Jupiter Jim Ahoy!”
Overview (Spoilers Below)
“Cloak and Swaggart”
Sunita loses her cloaking broach so April has to help her find it. We find out that Ruper Swaggart has taken the cloak so as to hide his pig mutation and continue with his coaching TV show empire. The girls snag back the cloak and ensue in a big chase with the brooding swine through a gamut of sendups inspired by pop culture notables before entrapping the pig-chef in a BBQ show. The Turtles return from their trip from being locked in their car.
“Jupiter Jim Ahoy!”
Jupiter Jim is showing up to a local con and the Turtles want to see him. They do just that and begin to learn that their hero action star is taking his role a bit too seriously even after all of these years and has taken a slew of fans prisoner including Leo and Mikey. After the turtles are reunited, Leo takes matters into his own hands and negotiates a peace.
Our Take
Both episodes of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles deal with former pop culture icons going nuts and both did a pretty funny job in showcasing just that. Everybody knows that superfan that shows up to Comic-Con and acts a little TOO extreme in their fandom while “Cloak and Swaggart” focused more on popular reality shows with comical parodies of Guy Fieri, Mrs. B., Ross, and more. We don’t get any further escalation from last week’s cliffhanger, but maybe we won’t need to as we near the end of the show’s first season.
