Review: Mike Judge Presents: Tales from the Tour Bus “George Clinton”

Time to funk shit up!

Overview (Spoilers Below)

The premiere episode of Mike Judge Presents introduces us to George Clinton, legendary grandmaster of funk that, together with his bands the Funkadelics and Parliament helped criss-cross the country into such a funk that it bought George Clinton multiple hit records and a legacy that permeates to this day with hip-hop and rap music that still samples his beats.

That said, the journey wasn’t all funky, some of it was junky. After discovering acid, George’s addictions would come to pass in the form of crack cocaine which nearly derailed his career had it not been for “Flashlight” probably saving his career.

Our Take

George Clinton’s story is sensational and makes for perfect animation because his whole band is a cast of cartoon characters just in real life. As a result, the show does a fabulous job of capturing the essence of Clinton’s career with a story that has somehow been managed over the course of only 30 minutes (if this were on Netflix, this would be twice the length).

The one drawback of the episode is the fact that I was expecting trippier acid sequences, especially whence considering Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butthead Do America has the best-produced trip sequence of all time. That doesn’t happen at all, but overall, “George Clinton” makes one hell of a funk lift-off that looks to be a fun season of silly stories.
