English Dub Review: Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These “In the Eternal Night”
The darkest night.
Overview (Spoilers Below)
Meet Reinhard von Lohengramm, a young and brash space military head of the Galactic Empire(no not that Galactic Empire) at the helm of a 20,000 shop fleet that at one point was cornered on three sides until he puts in play a plan to slice through the defenses of the Free Planets Alliance, the latter of which has nearly the double the amount of spaceships and are able to regroup despite sustaining heavy losses.
Our Take
For those coming down from 26 weeks of Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199, Funimation sets up another remaster of a space chess match between two sides at war with each other though in this instance it’s not made exactly clear what we’re fighting over now. We also don’t get nearly as many takes on the crazy space action going on outside, instead relegating us to just be subjected to a real “talker” of a first episode, extensive dialogue by way of the questionably cast Aaron Dismuke as the voice of “Reinhard”. When coupled with the Cliff Chapin voiced Siegfried Kircheis, I get a greater sense of a potential physical relationship than I do anything militarily which takes away from the show’s plot, even if it’s a sense that never comes to fruition.
