Review: Bob’s Burgers “Flu-ouise”

Cover your mouth, please.

Spoilers Below

To begin the seventh season of Bob’s Burgers, poor Louise has come down with a case of the flu. Sure, she gets to miss some school but it also means some awful fever dreams.

Laying in bed, Louise gathers all of her toys around her. However, her very favorite toy is missing – the Kuchi Kopi nightlight. Before Linda can give Louise her medicine, Louise asks her to retrieve Kuchi Kopi from the bathroom. While Linda is looking for it, Louise spits her medicine into a nearby cup. Unfortunately, Linda drops Kuchi Kopi in the toilet. She tries to wash it off but it falls into the toilet again. Now the nightlight is filled with water. Tina suggests they put it in rice then put it in the oven to dry out. Bad idea. The PVC part melts, making Kuchi Kopi look nightmarish. When Louise finds out, she is livid. She throws her family out of her room and ends up falling asleep.

As she sleeps, Louise dreams that messed up Kuchi Kopi is trying to take her to a fortress. During their travels, each of her toys tries to stop her. Louise begins to doubt whether the fortress is a good idea. The toys begin to chase her, forcing her to hide inside the fortress. Once inside, Louise meets “good” Kuchi Kopi, the original version of her melted nightlight. This Kuchi Kopi tells her that the fortress is her way of blocking everyone out and she needs to forgive her family. Louise agrees and destroys the fortress.

Meanwhile, Teddy tries to fix the melted Kuchi but fails miserably. Teddy takes Bob to a toy dealer who has a new nightlight for him but, in exchange, Bob and Teddy have to listen to the story of Kuchi Kopi. Armed with a new toy and the knowledge of the awesomeness of Kuchi Kopi, Bob returns to his family and sneaks the new nightlight into Louise’s sleeping arms. She wakes up, seeing her entire family in her room and confesses that she forgives them. But they still have to get her to take her medicine.

I adore Louise. It was a little weird that she wasn’t particularly violent in this episode and she seemed to forgive her family awfully quickly. Perhaps this is the writers’ way of getting her to mature. She will need to become a useful member of society eventually. Her antics are cute for a child but she won’t be a child forever. I hope we’ll get to see her mature more over this upcoming season.
