Review: Bob’s Burgers – “The Hormone-iums”

Tina is a member of The Hormone-iums, a group that sings songs about puberty and teenage issues. She would love to be the female soloist but, alas, that role belongs to Dottie. When Dottie comes down with mono, Tina is thrown into the lead role of their new play, Mona Nucleosis. Unfortunately, the play says that kissing is bad and mono is fatal. As a result, Tina is un-invited to a kissing party because everyone thinks she is anti-kissing. Torn between kissing and lead soloist, Bob tells Tina that she controls what she says. Tina decides to take control and changes the end of the play. Instead of the big death scene, she tells the student body the facts about mono and starts kissing everyone. In the end, she gets re-invited to the kissing party and kisses all of the boys.

At the restaurant, Linda has been auctioning off the items in lost and found. One of the items is one of Marshmallow’s large shoes. At first, no one wants to buy it. As soon as Linda puts a bottle of wine inside, transforming it into a wine holder, a bidding war begins. Gretchen buys the shoe for $15. She takes it back to the hair salon and the other women go crazy over it. Linda tries to make more wine shoes but it turns out that Marshmallow’s shoes are rather expensive. The Belcher family tries to get the Fischoeders to invest in the product. Both brothers refuse the offer. It’s a good thing, after all, since there is already a company that sells wine holders shaped like shoes. Onto the next idea – candle sandals!

While this episode wasn’t particularly entertaining, I was very impressed that Tina ended up standing up for the truth instead of letting Mr. Frond continue to spout lies about health issues. Granted, it was all so she could kiss some boys but she didn’t roll over just so she could continue to have the soloist role. A lot of teenagers won’t stand up to adults like that. Kids need to know that it is OK to stand up to adults when they are wrong. Maybe this will point them in the right direction. A little bit, anyway.
