Review: Star Wars Rebels – “Legacy”

Rebels-logo-big

See, Ezra had a vision. His parents were Imperial prisoners somewhere. A strange white Lothcat seems to be directing Ezra to a cloaked man standing guard on a rocky outcrop. Unfortunately, there aren’t any actual details in the vision. Ezra doesn’t know which prison holds his parents and only the Lothcat points him back to his home planet, Lothal.

Once Ezra wakes up, he rushes to tell Hera and Kanan about the vision. But neither are surprised. It turns out that Hera got some information from Tseebo, the friend of Ezra’s parents who had the Imperial implant fused to his brain. He told her that Ezra’s parents were, indeed, prisoners but he wasn’t sure where. And there were a thousand prison planets to check. Hera has been using all of her sources (and everyone else’s as well) to get more information but nothing new has been found.

Switching over to the Empire for a moment, the Inquisitors are talking with Admiral Konstantine. In the previous episode, The Seventh Sister found out that the Rebels are staying on Garel. However, the Admiral doesn’t trust the information. At least not until Agent Kallus confirms the validity of the intel. Kallus suggests that they work together since they have all been failing individually.

The next night, Hera reveals some information she received to Ezra. There was a mass prison break overnight. One of her sources intercepted a list of escaped prisoners but the Empire removed all of the identifying information before it was sent. They have no way of knowing which, if any, are Ezra’s parents. Kanan tells Ezra how to use the Force to help him find the right entry on the list. The Force is an amazing thing. Ezra is able to find an entry of a prisoner who was arrested on Lothal for treason within a few minutes. Convinced that it is one of his parents, Ezra insists on going to Lothal to find them. Hera points out that Lothal has been surrounded by Imperial ships, effectively blocking it off from them. Overhearing the conversation, Sabine lets them know that she heard that all of the Imperial ships have left Lothal. With that good news, Hera tells Ezra that they all with go with him. After all, they are family.

As Hera begins to prep the Ghost for takeoff, she calls Zeb and Chopper on the comm to tell them to come back from their supply run. Just not too quickly since they don’t want to attract attention. Before they can finish their conversation, three Star Destroyers appear overhead. The Empire has come to Garel. Hera and Sabine prepare the ship while Ezra and Kanan rush out to help Zeb and Chopper.

Zeb and Chopper have managed to get blocked by a group of Stormtroopers. Ezra and Kanan join them, trying to keep the Stormtroopers at bay. Upset at the new distraction, Ezra runs out and takes down two Stormtroopers with his lightsaber and tosses Kallus across the room with the Force. The Fifth Brother and The Second Sister appear as Kanan finishes off the other Stormtrooper squad. Ezra heads over to take them on by himself but Kanan shoots a panel, shutting the door before his Padawan could do something stupid.

The group heads back to the Ghost as Hera gets a call from Commander Sato and Rex. They want her to lead the fleet out of danger. Hera leads the Rebel fighters against the Imperial ships. Ezra and Kanan jump into the Phantom to help. Unfortunately, Konstantine catches the Liberator, the main Rebel ship, in his Star Destroyer’s tractor beam. Hera tells Ezra and Kanan to go to Lothal while she frees the Rebel ship from the grasp of the Empire. She magnificently pilots the side of the Ghost into the tractor beam emitter, freeing the Liberator. The Rebels leap into hyperspace, leaving the Imperial officers to wonder where they went.

Meanwhile, the Phantom lands on Lothal. The Jedi quickly find Ezra’s parents’ house burned to the ground. Ezra once again listens to the Force and finds the white Lothcat hiding in the rubble of the house. He scratches the cat on the chin before it darts off. Ezra, and Kanan by default, chase after the cat. Sadly, the cat leaps onto the back of a speeder bike, which takes off, leaving Ezra in the dust. But Ezra put a tracker on the cat so they are able to follow it anyway.

The Jedi find the cat in the mountains outside the city. As they walk up to the mountain, they are confronted by blaster fire. This is exactly how the events in Ezra’s first vision occurred. Confident, Ezra admits to the sniper that, while he doesn’t know Ezra, he may know Ezra’s parents. It turns out the the sniper, Ryder Azadi, does know Ezra’s parents. He brings both Ezra and Kanan into his hut. There, he tells Ezra about his parents and how they died. Ezra is sad but he remembers that his parents always told him to stay strong. With Kanan by his side, Ezra gains the strength to continue.

There were definitely some interesting points in this episode. Ezra showed a lot of strong emotions that may lead him to the Dark Side. He seemed very angry when he was fighting the Stormtroopers (and almost the Inquisitors), which isn’t a good sign for him. I wonder if this all may be some sort of huge manipulation scheme by the Empire to get Ezra to their side. It wouldn’t be completely out of character for them to use Ezra’s parents against him. And what is up with that sniper guy? It feels like he isn’t telling the complete truth about Ezra’s parents. I hope that the next episode continues with this storyline and doesn’t stick us with something unrelated. Please don’t leave me hanging!
