Review: Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors: “Contest of Champions: Part One”

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN

Spoilers Below

Spider-Man notices that all of Manhattan is emptied with the exception of Abomination, The Blue Beatle, and Skurge, so after beating the shit out of them Spider-Man is transported into space where he is told by The Collector that Spidey is a pawn in a game between him and his brother The Grandmaster. The winner wins dominion over Earth, and the first round is Spider-Man, Hulk, and Iron Man versus Kraven the Hunter, Molten Man, and Wendigo King.

Hulk and Iron Man are quickly removed from the game leaving Spider-Man all by himself to fight three. Fortunately, with quick wit and the powers of deception, Spider-Man is able to defeat all three villains and secure round one for The Collector.

Our Take

First of all, great job by Disney XD scheduling for giving us an hour of The Collector with two different guys voicing him on both Spider-Man( voiced by Jeff Bennett) and Guardians of the Galaxy (Tom Kenny). Second, I am thrilled that we are done with Spider-Man in that ridiculous SHIELD saga and are now back to a Spider-Man defending Manhattan.

You may think it sounds like that I’m going to score this week’s episode low. On the contrary, I really liked the producers’ choice in villains rogue gallery. Now, don’t tell me how in the hell Kraven the Hunter is able to pretty much defeat two of the Avengers (Iron Man and the Hulk) more or less by himself, but I liked Kraven, too. I liked him and I liked Skurge. Abomination probably wins an award for worst character design ever, and that’s saying a bunch with this show, but overall I thought the battles were well-executed and now I’m kinda hooked for the next four episodes, though I’m sure you could place bets on who is going to win the whole thing, right?
