We Remember Brad Anderson (1924-2015)

Brad Anderson, creator of the Marmaduke comic strip, has died. He was 91.

Born in Jamestown, New York, Anderson served in the United States Navy for three years before attending Syracuse University. He graduated with a B.F.A in fine arts in 1951, creating his first major strip, Grandpa’s Boy, a few years later. It ran for 16 years.

Of course, Anderson will be most remembered for his comic Marmaduke, which he created in 1954. At one time, Marmaduke appeared in over 500 newspapers worldwide. It was adapted into a feature film in 2010. Anderson continued to write and illustrate the strip up until his death, calling it “never a burden, never a job. It’s just fun.”

We at BubbleBlabber would also be remiss not to mention Anderson’s cameo last year in an episode of Rick and Morty entitled “Raising Gazorpazorp.” Okay, it clearly wasn’t actually him (Maurice LaMarche provided the voice), but we couldn’t resist.

Anderson is survived by his wife of 70 years, Barbara, as well as his daughter, Christine, three sons, Craig, Paul, and Mark, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
