Graphic Novel Review: Regular Show Original GN Vol. 02 Noir Means Noir Buddy

How do you infuse a bone-chilling tale into a graphic novel inspired by one of the funnier shows on television? Whatever the case may be, that’s a tough sell and that’s even with a Regular Show that is known for messing around in a number of different genres while freebasing in buddy comedies as much as it can. Romantic comedy, action adventure, sci-fi, Regular Show the television series goes through a lot of different arenas and usually comes out alright.

Novel writers Rachel Connor and Robert Luckett could’ve easily stepped into any one of the aforementioned genres and have sculpted an effort that felt right at home. Instead, she bolsters a gripping tale following Mordecai’s daring exploits into discovering who the hell stole his girl’s bike, and worse yet, whatever sick maniac took off with Pops’ socks! During the course of his investigation, fans of classic noir tales or video games will recognize the DNA. Rife with twists, turns, damzels in distress, the inner-monologue, it’s all here folks…AND THEN HE’S CAUGHT!

This is where Rigby jumps in with the action buddy comic routine seen in 90s shows like A-Team, and while it’s a lot of fun, I found myself more attached to the noir portion of the story rather than this one. Also, I didn’t quite understand the idea of Rigby saving Mordecai, only to turn around and spend the rest of the issue arguing with him to the point where the friendship comes to blows.

Overall, the Regular Show novels still seem to be so ahead of their time it’s not even a joke. NO ONE else does quality spin-offs of TV. To be perfectly honest, Rachel and Robert should write for Regular Show the TV series, because maybe having fresh ideas like this are not a bad thing.
