Review: Stone Quackers ”Blue Feathers”

Spoilers Below

Dottie slips into a dream world where a town-wide mystery is going on. Whit takes on the lead of a sort of crime boss named Big Daddy who cuts off Bug’s beak and almost rapes his mother in the process. Dottie shows up at Whit’s stake house and then has to go with him back to where the rest of the guys are. Barry gets wind of the gathering after Bug’s mom escapes and pleads for help. The Officer ends up driving over and setting off a gun that is in Whit’s hand thereby killing himself. Don’t worry though, it was all a dream and really Dottie is tired and gets walked home by Whit and Bug. Maybe it’s what she’s been watching.

Our Take

Dottie very well could be the craziest duck of the bunch. But the real winner for this episode was the absolutely stellar art direction which certainly takes the Animation Domination block to another level that, quite simply, I haven’t seen before. The shading during the scene where Dottie is hiding, the dark/painted back grounds that made me feel like I was in Resident Evil, or how about the end scene where Dottie is watching TV? Stone Quackers lulls everyone in with it’s sweet and affable aesthetic but clonks you over the head with a dark world doesn’t let up. Furthermore, it was great seeing Bug again, and Whit as a villain works really well. I actually hope we get more of Dottie’s dream sequences because they are a lot of fun and I could see them being almost like the Treehouse episodes of the series. Did the premise do anything to progress Dottie/Barry’s mutual love interest? No, and maybe this one should have aired first. But, ‘Blue Feathers’ offered up fans something a little different that goes down smooth.
