DVD Review: The Simpsons Season 17
The thing that impressed me most about this release isn’t just the fact that you get the full 17th season of The Simpsons. It wasn’t even the deleted scenes and animatics for a bunch of the episodes. It isn’t the fact that this season contains both an Emmy winning episode ”Three Gays of the Condo” and an Emmy winning actor (Kelsey Grammer as ‘Sideshow Bob’). And finally, it isn’t that the 17th season of The Simpsons is priced JUST right.
Instead the thing that impresses me most is Matt Groening’s enthusiasm when doing the episode commentaries for the series after all these years. Every time I hear the show creator’s voice talk about an episode of The Simpsons he acts like a kid in a candy store. And with good reason. The show has lasted 26 seasons on one network and it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere anytime soon.
As mentioned, you get a good amount of special features, and the reason why I went with the DVD version of this release is because the Blu-Ray didn’t have the 3D molded head of Sideshow Bob for the Blu-Ray. I would’ve like to seen a better variety in special features, perhaps some behind-the-scenes docs featuring the producers of The Simpsons putting together certain episodes whether it’d be in the writers room or even in the production end. In any case, listening to Matt Groening talk up The Simpsons even after all of this time is a gem by itself, and the die-hard Simpsons fan shouldn’t miss this.
