Judas Priest Addresses The Simpsons Calling Them A Death Metal Band

Following the release of their new album, Redeemer of Souls, Judas Priest band members Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, and Richie Faulker sat down with Radio.com to answers a few questions about the record, their history, and the Simpsons death metal controversy.

Apparently the band had no idea they would be referred to this way in the episode entitled “Steal This Episode,” but really didn’t think it was a big deal. “It’s a cartoon. Let it go,” Halford said to the people making such a fuss.

However, the frontman expressed his gratitude for the writers correcting the problem. “All respect to The Simpsons people, they realized that it was going off, then the next episode it starts with Bart writing ‘Judas Priest is NOT a death metal band.’ And they didn’t need to do that, but that was a very, very sweet thing to offer back for redemption,” he said.

Halford was also quick to express the surreal feeling of guest starring on a TV legend like The Simpsons. “You’re at a table reading and suddenly Bart Simpson starts talking, and Homer Simpson is right over there,” he said. “If there’s any way we can keep pushing metal and the name of Judas Priest we’ll do that, and The Simpsons is the longest-running, most successful comedy ever. Who would say no, especially when they’re very picky and choosy. The Simpsons is such a strong brand, any band or artist that has been on The Simpsons is equally strong in signature and brand and uniqueness. It was quite an honor to be on that show.”

For what it’s worth, I’ve been listening to Judas Priest’s new album while writing this article, and it’s pretty legit. If you’re a fan of the band, you should definitely check it out.
