Comics Review: Bravest Warriors #21

apr141026

With the Aeon Worm storyline wrapped up on the animated show, the comic can now head off into a new storyline. And since new episodes of the show won’t come out until 2015, the comic has free rein to do whatever it wants.

Before I get into the nitty gritty of the comic, I feel the need to do a little bit of fangirling up front.

OMG. THERE IS A SAILOR MOON REFERENCE IN MY BRAVEST WARRIORS COMIC. FOR REALS. O.M.G.

Ahem. With that out of the way, let’s get into the comic itself.

Spoilers Below

All of the Warriors (and Plum) have just finished a lovely picnic. Everyone (except Plum) has eaten way too much food and is ready to explode. Plum, however, continues to eat. She offers a spicy egg to Danny, who stupidly shoves the egg onto his face. Even Plum knows the food goes in the face, not on the face. That is when Chris decides it is time to head back to their ship.

Unfortunately, Catbug can’t remember how to use the teleporter. It seems that Catbug only accidentally got them to the planet. He doesn’t even remember how he did it. And now everyone is trapped on a fiery gas planet.

Each Warrior takes a turn trying to get the teleporter to work. Finally, it asks for an access code. Which no one knows. Chris starts listing all sorts of random words and phrases, in the hopes he’ll come across the correct answer. None of them work. Beth tries bullying the machine to take them home. That just makes the machine sassy. Catbug asks nicely. The teleporter insults them.

Beth angrily asks if there is another way off the planet. (Are you ready? Please tell me you’re ready. Well, even if you aren’t….here it is!) Plum dons a Sailor Mercury-esque tiara with goggles and opens a small portable computer. (WOOOOO SAILOR MOON!) She notes that the atmosphere outside the protective dome consists of lethal amounts of methane and ammonia.

Beth yells at Catbug, upsetting the little guy. He flies up to the top of a tree, far away from the friends. Meanwhile, Chris and Wallow once again try to beat up the teleporter. That opens the ground beneath them, sucking both Chris and the teleporter down a deep hole. Chris seems to be OK but Robo-Chris has mysteriously appeared. But, suddenly, something drags Chris away. What will the Warriors do now?

The side-story in this issue is pretty hysterical. It is titled “The Littlest League.” Wallow decides that he hasn’t been exercising his pets enough so he takes them to a park to play baseball. Just as they begin to play, Impossibear declares that he must play the most important position. Cue a montage of Impossibear trying every single position and being absolutely awful at every one. Eventually, he learns that he can just sit on the bench and eat snacks for the entire game. That is when he heartily declares that he loves baseball.

I think that this is my very favorite comic book issue ever. Partially because the jokes and the story are really good, but mostly because they snuck a Sailor Moon reference in. There are also these really cute notes at the bottom of (almost) every page that are little asides from the author, Kate Leth. I didn’t notice them the first couple of times I read the issue. I guess I was too busy reading the story. But they are really cute. I am very interested to see where this storyline goes. (I am also interested to see if Danny ever gets to drop the kids off at the pool. The poor guy.) I need the next issue NOW.
