2016 Emmys – Outstanding Animated Program Predictions and Wish List

Who do we think deserves the Emmy nods?

Unlike the Comedy, Drama, and Variety Emmy categories, Outstanding Animated Program recognizes individual episodes instead of entire seasons, with one episode submitted per show.

PREDICTIONS

Because of Animation’s single-episode factor and the fact that it is not a high-profile category, it can be tricky to predict. But it is not impossible. Certain trends have held over the last several years. For example, even though The Simpsons is well past its golden age, Emmy voters are still more familiar with it than most animated shows, so it keeps getting nominated. This year, the very deserving “Halloween of Horror” was submitted, and it might just be the favorite. Bob’s Burgers has been nominated each of the last four years (including a win in 2014 for “Mazel-Tina”), so pencil in “The Horse Rider-er.” Usually, there is one nominee aimed at kids – Gravity Falls is the most impressive from that bunch. The last couple spots could go to regulars like Archer or South Park, but I’ll take a chance on debut appearances from BoJack Horseman and Rick and Morty.

1. Bob’s Burgers, “The Horse Rider-er

2. BoJack Horseman, “Escape From L.A.”

3. Gravity Falls, “Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back the Falls”

4. Rick and Morty, “Total Rickall”

5. The Simpsons, “Halloween of Horror

WISH LIST

For the wishlist, I will not necessarily stick to the episodes that were submitted, but I will limit myself to one episode per show (which is a little difficult in a few cases). The first spot has to go to Rick and Morty, with one of the most fiendishly clever sci-fi promises ever in “Total Rickall.” BoJack Horseman submitted “Escape From L.A.,” which is excellent, but the hilarious, raucous, and touching “Let’s Find Out” is even better. “Halloween of Horror” was one of the best Simpsons episodes in years. The one-season wonder Moonbeam City deserves a spot for “Lasers and Liars,” mostly thanks to Will Forte coming up with a bunch of fake names of old-timey blues musicians. And the last spot can go to Gravity Falls, which saved up a lot of its imagination for “Weirdmageddon Part 1.

1. Rick and Morty, “Total Rickall”

2. BoJack Horseman, “Let’s Find Out

3. The Simpsons, “Halloween of Horror

4. Moonbeam City, “Lasers and Liars

5. Gravity Falls, “Weirdmageddon Part 1
