We Are One Step Closer To An “Undergrads” Movie

But how much closer?

MTV has an entire closet filled with skeletons of really good animated intellectual property that just remains unused, but if this news is any indication, perhaps more could be done for the likes of say Good Vibes, Beavis and Butthead, and/or Clone High.

Nearly 20 years ago, creator Pete Williams brought the series Undergrads to American shores on MTV by way of Canada, but after only 13 episodes, the series was shelved, never to be heard from again. There have been hints at future seasons (Teletoon’s on board so long as another broadcaster were to help pick up some of the costs) as well as possibly a movie, but there were a few legal hurdles in the way from THX and MTV that stopped any real progress from being made on that front…until now.

Yesterday, Williams announced that his producers are one step closer to producing an Undergrads feature film after having secured the feature film rights from MTV. The next step? Paying for it. It wouldn’t surprise me if Pete & Co. go the crowdfunding route, but then questions of distribution and such come into play, so we are probably a way’s off, but still closer than we were last week.

This cartoon series follows four high-school buddies and their new experiences as undergraduate college students. Each unique character is voiced by show creator Pete Williams and personifies a different archetypical university scholar. The series revolves around Nitz, a shy guy lacking self-esteem, whose pals – Rocko the party animal frat boy, Cal the ladies’ man and Gimpy the nerd – all deal with their coming-of-age, student loans, dorm life and more post-high-school tribulations.
