WATCH: “Weird Simpsons VHS” Intro Definitely Lives Up to Its Name…And Then Some

Simpsons VHS 1

We’ve covered a lot of Simpsons intros over the years – by both guest animators and fans – but “Weird Simpsons VHS” might just be the strangest.

From the warped noodle of director and animator Yoann Hervo (and some help from Hugo Moreno) comes a seriously trippy journey through the famous opening sequence of The Simpsons.

I’ve thrown around the word “trippy” a lot, but no video yet has earned the adjective quite like this one. The animation is psychedelic in an imaginative and seriously fucked up way that still manages to be light enough for even the most sensitive of stoners. And it’s quite impressive to boot.

The sound design was completed courtesy of Florian Calmer with music by Valentin Ducloux, both of whom deserve some serious props as well.

And apparently this intro is just a small part of a much grander project. Hervo, Charles Huettner, Ivan Dixon (remember him?) and James Hatley originally set out to include a whole slew of animators who would produce a short story set in the Simpsons world using their own individual styles.

Despite the fact that the project hasn’t been achieved,” Hervo said, “I wanted to finish what I started.”

We should be thankful for that. And I reckon the rest of the fanbase would be too if they saw it.

So, Matt Groening, what’s up?
