SYFY Reveals Revamped Cast For “Magical Girl Friendship Squad”

Syfy has revealed new and returning cast for Magical Girl Friendship Squad set to premiere this summer. By returning, I mean cast that was part of the Magical Girl Friendship Squad: Origins series that premiered earlier this year which, in this case, will be Anna Akana returning in the role of “Daisy”.

According to DeadlineQuinta Brunson replaces Brianna Baker as the voice of “Alex” in what is being described as an “anime-inspired comedy” despite being produced by NYC’s Cartuna Studios which means, of course, it isn’t anime, just that the series is taking visual cues from Sailor Moon and the like much in the same way Steven Universe does. . The Kelsey Stephanides created series is about two roommates trying to balance real-life responsibilities like paying rent with saving the universe.  Ana Gasteyer takes the place of Anika Noni Rose as “Nut”, the red panda that lives with the girls and empowers them with their abilities to help protect Earth. Matteo Lane takes on the role of Verus’ evil cohort “Corvin”.

Christine Baranski (The Good Fight, The Big Bang Theory)”Verus”, Manny Jacinto (The Good Place)”Alex”, Helen Hong (Silicon Valley, The Unicorn)”Daisy’s mom”, Eric Bauza (Looney Tunes Cartoons, Muppet Babies) “Daisy’s dad” and Sarah “Squirm” Sherman (Three Busy Debras writer) “Lulu” will recur with guest stars like Jason Mantzoukas (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, John Wick 3) “The Emptier”, Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds, DuckTales)”Gloriana”, Vella Lovell (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend)”CBD Monster”, Jamie Loftus (Robot Chicken writer)”Nightscreamr” and Patti Harrison (Shrill, I Think You Should Leave)”The Mushroominations”. Stephanie Sheh (Sailor Moon), Taylor Ortega (Kim Possible, Love Life) and Daisy Hobbs ( Broadway’s Aladdin, musical web series Outcast) will be additional voices.

Our Take

I’ll be curious to see if the PC police reacts to some of the casting decisions negatively, but from where I sit, Syfy is gearing up for it’s first animated hit with Magical Girl Friendship Squad. Now, let’s get a start date!
