Review: The Smurfs “My Smurf the Hero/Alien Smurf”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

When Scaredy gets tired of being scared, he dons a superhero costume and tries to conquer his fear. An alien child visits the Smurfs and puts them under his spell in order to turn them into his friends.

Our Take:

There’s no need to fear. Do you want to know why? Because we have yet another batch of Smurf adventures that are out of this world. A non-frightening way to start October, if I do say so myself.

The first episode, “My Smurf the Hero”, featured another misadventure with the fearful Scaredy Smurf. After dreaming about saving Smurfette from Gargamel as “Super Smurf”, Scaredy decides to make his dream come true with the help of Handy. Unfortunately, being a hero isn’t as easy as it sounds, as Scaredy wound up making things worse for the other Smurfs due to his “heroic” duties. He then must prove his worth as a real superhero when an ogre threatens Smurf-kind. I thought it was nice that the show is focusing more on Scaredy Smurf after his appearance in “Mind the Cat” and “Smurfs in Disguise”. This episode not only provided some suitable comedy, but it also showcased Scaredy doing something that he’s never done before: facing his fears as a jetpack-wearing hero. It could’ve been even better if Scaredy came clean by revealing his identity instead of keeping it a secret from the other Smurfs in the end. Other than that, it’s a passable episode that sees the world’s scariest Smurf trying his hand at being a fearless superhero.

The second episode, “Alien Smurf”, sees the Smurfs encountering life from another planet. A mysterious green light known as Gleego arrives in Smurf Village with one goal in mind: to make some friends. Disguised as Jokey Smurf, Gleego uses his device to mind control the Smurfs into being his friends. Luckily, Smurfette is the only survivor since Gleego is not a massive fan of girls. Smurfette then teams up with the other female Smurfs to save the boy Smurfs from Gleego’s control. This one happened to be a bit better than the previous episode. This is primarily because of its humorous depiction of Gleego being a spoiled brat, and it represented more of the female Smurfs in action, not just Smurfette. The episode also helped in teaching kids that making friends by force is not the way to go.

Overall, this week’s episodes of The Smurfs were a tad weaker than the previous ones regarding their executions, mainly “My Smurf the Hero”. However, they’re heroic enough to keep the show’s charming nature intact. Also, let’s get more of Scaredy Smurf into the spotlight, please.
