Review: The New V.I.P’s “Pilot”

I wasn’t sure what to expect from The New V.I.P.’s when I first sat down to watch this show. Of course, how interesting and funny can a comedy about working in the corporate world, murdering your CEO and taking over the company be? This isn’t the type of television show I usually watch, so I decided to find out for myself. Keeping an open mind, I logged into Amazon and started streaming the show.

Slight Spoilers follow

The New V.I.P.’s follows four characters – paper pushers Bud and Lenny, Dee the office secretary, and Clarence the security guard, as they try to cover up the death of the CEO.

Initially, I was unimpressed from the moment characters started to show on the screen. They seemed to HOWEVER, with each scene the art style grew on me and by the end of the episode, it didn’t even matter. More importantly, this style of animation works really well for this show. Score one for The New V.I.P.’s

The pilot episode’s humor started off a little dry for me. There were a lot of dick jokes and it seemed as if randomly whipping out someone’s penis and pissing on somebody was going to be a regular thing. Not my cup of tea. Luckily, that only happened twice this episode. Given the context, perhaps this is a metaphor for how lower level employees feel when they get crapped on by the big guys from corporate. Anyway… as the episode progressed, the writers made good use of awkward humor. For example, the office snitch, Charlie, slowly caresses and obsesses over Bud’s hair while pointing the finger at him for vandalizing the office with graffiti, before slowly and very awkwardly walking backward out of the scene. There was some shock humor as well, like when the CEO of the company literally takes a piss on Bud and Lenny inside of his private bathroom. Things took a very interesting turn when Ray Liotta (voiced by William Salyers) makes an unexpected appearance. This was a major highlight of the episode and the character of Ray Liotta almost stole the show! This pilot episode ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger that left me wanting to see what happens next.

I won’t give away any more details about the show, but if your interest has been piqued, give The New V.I.P.’s a shot. While I was initially underwhelmed by The New V.I.P.’s, by the end of the episode I found myself laughing out loud. I consider myself a tough critic, so to be swayed from questioning whether I will be able to finish a single episode to wanting to see the next episode immediately afterward means something in my book. It is crude, vulgar and isn’t afraid to throw a little violence into the mix. I personally am interested to see how this show plays out and what crazy hijinks The New V.I.P.’s are going to get into. I’m more than sure that The New V.I.P.’s has a bright future ahead of itself.
