Review: The Movie Show Does Batman

The problem with doing a show about movies, your audience has to have somewhat of a general understanding of the movies you are talking about. When you’re on a movie-talk show via Syfy, your options need to be in the science fiction arena which can be a fickle business because your assumption is most of your audience has seen whatever movies that are topics of discussion. For The Movie Show, this becomes obvious when a movie like Harry Potter becomes a topic of discussion, a movie and/or book that I haven’t had the bother to see. As such, the entire time Deb and Wade are talking about Harry Potter, I naturally go tone deaf and am not privy to any and all jokes and gags being made that concern the series.

Such will be the delicate balancing act that will be Syfy’s The Movie Show. If one is to make a bunch of jokes about Colin Farrell’s expense, they have to hurt a bit. If not, viewers who do not care about Colin Farrell are going to be not privy to any of the gags that are to be had. This is notwithstanding the fact that we’re talking up a bunch of upcoming movies (like The Batman and Voyagers) that we hope are going to be released in the near future, but with COVID limitations, release dates are in the air and even the manner of which those movies will release are very much in doubt. For example, Voyagers was supposed to be released in theaters on November 25th. Here we are, November 30th, and we haven’t a clue when this film is coming out.

Coming to the rescue, is Rory Scovel. The longtime stand-up is a great way to muck things up a bit and make sure we get laughs that really require no prior knowledge of pop culture. That’s not to say The Movie Show doesn’t have some comedic moments outside of the movie references. The “End of the World” bit was pretty funny, and Wade’s nude-scapade had some strong moments as well. I think it’s the latter sketch bits that are going to keep The Movie Show afloat, the movies are just the Trojan horse for the series order.
