Review: Steven Universe “Reunited”

A Fusion to Remember…

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

The episode begins with a fun musical number as Steven attempts to keep everyone emotionally happy & stable-minded given the recent chain of events that happened during the previous episodes of this season. Steven at least succeeds in making this wedding happen without any problems, and It’s a romantic scene that properly conveys all the emotional splendor you’d expect from a wedding with characters that we the audience care about. At least, until Steven begins to uncontrollably cry which is a tell-tale sign of something foreboding to happen…

During the course of this big half-hour special, The inhabitants of Beach City takes the proper precautions of their new Mayor to get to safety during this crisis, while Blue & Yellow Diamond show up on Earth with a Vengence and have come to collect the “Cluster” which has become the ongoing plot-McGuffin during the course of this show. And since Steven has the likable nature to be friends with almost anything & anyone, he ends up having the Cluster fight on their side and take on Yellow Diamond, while The Crystal Gems along with a few surprising characters, join in the battle against Blue Diamond and the battle itself is a grand spectacle that must be seen to be believed. I was even more wowed by the return of a specific character I assumed wouldn’t be making an appearance again, but Rebecca Sugar sure as hell dicked with my expectations.

Since this is a longer episode than usual, the 2nd half of this is where shit gets real. As the Gems along with Steven are thrown into what I can only describe as a Psychic limbo realm with Steven encouraging them to keep fighting which shows that even when he doesn’t see himself as a leader, he sure as hell has the qualities of one. As Steven attempts to get the point across with the two Diamonds, they both seem resistant at first, as they don’t know anything about The Rose/Pink reveal But the episode ends when Steven manages to get the message across about who he’s supposed to be in a way even I didn’t expect…

Our Take

Aside from this episode making TV history as the first LGBT Wedding & Lesbian Kiss in a children’s cartoon (Suck-It Legend of Korra), It equally excelled with how the writers managed to make damn sure to give every character their moment to shine against Blue Diamond, whether it’s low-level characters like Peridot stealing the spotlight in the most hilarious ways possible, or surprising characters who I didn’t expect to join the battle and did the impossible by turning a personal & emotional flaw into a strength.

As for the cliffhanger ending with Steven reaching some sort of understanding between the two Diamonds, You can argue that Yellow & Blue Diamond maybe family to Pink, but they’re also oppressive brutal dictators who have fucked up countless planets and gave anyone who is different a death sentence, whether physically or socially. Blue comes close to being a more sympathetic character compared to Yellow, Not to mention we have yet to see White Diamond who’s been briefly talked about but yet to be introduced.

I honestly have no idea where the show goes from here after this episode, but this one knew how to end on a high note.
