Review: Smiling Friends “Desmond’s Big Day Out”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Smiling Friends follows two guys name Charlie and Pim who seem to have a pretty typical day until they run into a guy named Desmond trying to blow his brains out. To help him out, they opt to invite him over for dinner, but that’s a mess, and soon it gets more and more difficult for Pim to showcase the correct reasons to live.

Meanwhile, their friend Allen is trying to track down a mouse that takes his cheese. He runs into some dude who lives in the wall and has a bit of an attitude. Allen continues on his mouse hunt but actually runs into a “bliblie” guilty of taking Allen’s cheese. Worst yet, there are millions of these things and they go crazy all over the house.

Charlie, Pim, and Desmond return and put an end to all of the critters trying to kill Allen. This cures Desmond of his depression and turns him into a successful exterminator.

Our Take

Is Michael Cusack turning into a star here in America? What the hell is this, O’Malley?? Two for two on solid premieres for Mike, and I might even like this show better than the one that just got ordered to series. Smiling Friends has that similar feel to the early Adult Swim series that used to produce shows with weird/shapely characters like Aqua Teen or Squidbillies and continues a strong invasion of Australian-based animation. Featuring strong vocal contributions from the Wolfhard brothers aka Nick and Finn, solid writing, and possibly the funniest show of the night in terms of sheer jokes, Smiling Friends would NOT look weird opposite anything else on Adult Swim.
