Review: My Year Of Dicks
We here at Bubbleblabber know Pamela Ribon best as a writer for a couple of Rick and Morty comic stories including “Summer’s Eve” and “Ready Player Morty”, but now we get to finally review her film-making chops by way of her new animated film, My Year of Dicks.
My Year of Dicks is the animated antidote to other coming of age films like American Pie where the premise is usually focused from the male perspective of trying to get laid in that, in this instance, Pamela gives us a first-hand account of yes, wanting to lose her virginity, but not just to any old scrag that walks down the street, though that hasn’t stopped them from trying. Pamela introduces us to quite a few characters over the course of her five-chapter/25-minute animated film that range from almost rapists to even Nazis. Even the last guy featured was a bit off kilter, but hey, I guess we were all a little weird in high school.
In any event, the film is an animation fan’s delight, featuring aesthetics that range from collage, rotoscope, archival footage, to that of even anime, juxtaposed on the outskirts of Houston, TX in the 1990s. The romantic comedy is directed by Sara Gunnarsdóttir and is a slight adaptation of Ribon’s memoir entitled NOTES TO BOYS (AND OTHER THINGS I SHOULDN’T SHARE IN PUBLIC). The film comes from FX Networks which makes me think this whole project was meant for FX’s Cake, however, we haven’t heard if a sixth season of that series is on the way or not, but it doesn’t mean we still aren’t getting the fruits of which My Year Of Dicks might very well be the most ripe.
Featuring a rock-solid cast and a hilarious premise for an animated television series, My Year of Dicks flips the classic coming-of-age trope on it’s head with some veins of quirkiness that would be instantly recognizable by fans of say a Bob’s Burgers or Big Mouth. Pamela Ribon has already shown her chops as a writer in comics, but My Year of Dicks shows that she should be looked at for more serious projects down the road from FX or anyone else for that matter. Christ, I just remembered her conversation with her dad! *cringe*
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
