Review: Kirby Buckets “Art Attack”

Spoilers Below

Kirby tries to submit a piece for an art gallery at school but the teacher rejects the budding animator’s work. Kirby still thinks the character is good, but no one else gives a shit. While at the local lounge, he meets Shard. Turns out Shard has had similar issues with Kirby’s art teacher and invites the aspiring artist to meet a group of artsie types that all look like they should be committed and Kirby seems to fit right in.

Dawn finds out that Eli used to be a model so she seeks him out so that she can be a model, too. The duo head to an agency and Eli seems to be a hit, so much so that Dawn doesn’t even get looked at for a gig and Eli gets one like right away. Dawn becomes an intern and Eli goes to work.

Fish is feeling a bit lonely so he befriends a dirty yet stuffed frog that talks. Kirby’s with his art friends, and Eli is helping out Dawn, so he’s gotta make do. Eventually, Kirby stops by to see Fish and K&P and Kirby seems like a more scumbag version of his old self. Unfortunately, that comes to a head when his new friends opt to travel to school and destroy the same art gallery that Kirby was rejected from.

Kirby turns down an attempt to destroy the art gallery, so his art group retaliates by throwing him in a closet. Kirby texts both Eli and Fish so as to come help him escape, and they do. Next up, the trio has to stop the art gallery from being destroyed and they do so by having Eli show up wearing a frog hat which gains the ire of the crowd. Kirby’s art friends try to ruin the show, but get a taste of their own medicine and Dawn finds out that modelling isn’t what it’s cracked up to be, but maybe she can be an agent? Kirby adds a new frog friend to his cartoon group as we fade to black.

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t digging this week’s episode from the onset and I thought I was gonna dish out my first bad grade for the series. I was like ”Ok, if you’re gonna have THREE plots, why put in a montage of any sorts?” I RIGHT away listened to the ”Montage” song from Team American: World Police getting ready to bury ”Art Attack”, but as time had passed, I couldn’t help but warm up a bit.

First, the bad. I don’t like seeing Kirby act like the douche…even to Fish and his ridiculous hat. I prefer my Kirby to be a smiling and dapper S.O.B. that everyone loves! Shard and his friends reminded me of every single reason why the rents in Brooklyn, NYC are sky high, and the cartoons were scant.

Thankfully, we soon got to see what makes this show great. The slow-down scene at the end featuring Eli was awesome, and the last minute or so showed a lot of the heart that this show has, and for the first time we saw Kirby interact with his animated friends. I mean, not really the first time, but we really only saw like head nods to his artistic creations. This time around, Kirby TALKED with his cartoon friends! Is this something we’ll get to see more of as time goes on? I hope so…we can use some more make-believe. And next time I decide to rip this show for having a montage, I’ll just remember that even Rocky had a montage.
