Review: The Boondocks “The New Black”

Riley finally got the attention of the school for saying everything is gay, like you didn’t see this coming.

Spoilers Below

You have a kid, who is in a purple scarf, getting called gay by Riley. Apparently, people who dance gay are not gay. Who knew? Lol. Everyone is up in arms, including an ugly ass Ellen. This gets Riley on camera again, saying everyone calling him a  bully has an outie butthole. That’s just more fuel to the fire, creating a fervor outside the Freeman door. Robert doesn’t really think this happens a lot, but Huey tells him it does. Granddad just wants Riley to say something in his defense, but Riley actually stands up for what he said. This brings Rollo Goodlove in, except no one wants him there, because he’s the nail in the coffin He only makes things worse because he’s only out for himself.

Rollo gives us a lesson into what’s good for television, where you can say nigga all day long, but you can’t say (I’m guessing it’s fag or some derivative, you’ll have to find out when you get the DVDS tomorrow.) Rollo tells Robert that he is going to extort Robert for money. This seems like a scheme to get his game back. Rollo tells the Freemans that he took this so he can get back in the public light. He has no attention anymore since they cancelled his TV show.

Just then, Robert gets a call from Walter Sweetlove, the president of Yes-Homo. He wants to stop by for a chat. And chat he does, over a spot of tea. So, the Freemans, Rollo, and Sweetlove are conversing, and Walter tells them he got his start under Rollo for his “Jambalaya of Justice League.” Him and Rollo start bickering, and then Walter goes into what he’s about with Yes-Homo. He thinks Riley said the kid was gay for being dumb or stupid, and Riley stands by it, saying he meant gay as in “gay.”

And as Rollo said, Sweetlove is in it for the money. Sweetlove then says it’s impersonal, and wants Riley in his youth campaign. He wants him in because he’s young and urban, and will destroy him if he doesn’t. He wants Riley to” go under sensitivity training, do a PSA advocating tolerance (which is one of the funniest moments I’ve seen this season), and the obvious public apology. It took over 86 takes for him to do it, and we don’t even know if it was done. During the public apology, Rollo shows up, and shifts focus onto his mixtape before going to Riley. The moment comes, and Riley is mulling over what to do. In the most baller move in this show, he says “Gay is gay,” and throws up the double deuces like Nixon.

The crowd is hating the move, but Robert bowls him over, and tells the crowd that he is special needs. Rollo sees this, and pounces on it like a steak. Rollo then attacks Sweetlove for preying on Riley. Somehow, they got out of this, for the moment. Sweetlove, on the other hand, is about to get attacked by an angry mob.

The news hits, and Sweetlove makes a public apology, and is made out to be the new face of hate. Even the news guy is confused now, because he doesn’t know the right terms anymore. Rollo is celebrating with the Freemans, because he put Sweetlove on the defense. Riley, however, is still pissed that everyone is calling him retarded. There’s another knock on the door, and a huge mountain of a man is at the door.

His name is Philbert Slowlove, and he is the president and national director of the Specially Able Alliance Against Defamation. I have to quote this, because it’ fucking hilarious to hear someone who looks like Zeus from No Holds Barred (and I guess Friday) say, “I got those fags off yo ass.” Riley does what he does best, and digs himself another hole by using shortbus kids, and telling us who is really specially able. We get classics like ninjas, and Luke Skywalker. But Riley was two letters away from calling him retarded, That’s because Huey saves his ass.

Slowlove gets pissed, and downright tells the Freemans that he is going to extort them for a lot of money, under the guise of a donation. When Robert tells him that they have no money, he starts trying to loot the house. That is, until Robert offers Riley up for a PR campaign. Slowlove goes outside to talk to his PR people, and comes back in with a fully detailed sketch of the scene. As Huey said, that is a special ability. Riley is to be used as the poster child for special needs people, but Riley uses retarded, and that enrages the special giant.

Two weeks later, the Freemans make it to the SAAAD Olympics. Riley is happier than a pig in shit, because he uses the retard to its full advantage. Sweetlove is there, only because his organization paid for the whole event. Unfortunately for Riley, the full effect of being a special needs kid, and backs out again. This time, he calls the entire competitor pool a bunch of retards. This enrages everyone, expecially The Tiny Lister looking man. He throws Riley into the mass of kids, and he is getting stomped out. He somehow escapes, and runs for his life. Unfortunately, the mass behind him runs him right into the photographer.

What a way to end The Boondocks! This episode was so funny, because it goes to places that not many shows want to go: the overly popular trend of political correctness. When our fathers were in school, retard was something that was said rather often. The funny thing is that it was said way less than how many times Riley said it. The way it ended had me going for a bit . This episode was one of the funniest to date.

Now I know what you’re going to say. “CM, why are you okay with this episode, but not Freedomland?” Well the answer is simple. Where “Freedomland” was about an amusement park run by middle class slaves, this just took the American stance on political correctness, and kicked it right in the teeth. This is something a lot of people deal where we use the words as they’re meant to be, but always get taken as the slang definition that has no correlation whatsoever. You can’t say anything now without pissing someone off.

Ok, excuse me for a second while I get off my soapbox.

So, the series finale had that feeling that there was supposed to be more episodes. I am going to touch on this more in the Bubbleblabber Magazine, but there were a lot of open ends to the series. For one, Robert is still broke, Riley is a borderline menace, and Huey was almost non-existent. And “The New Black” did nothing really to address it.

The episode was very entertaining. There was nothing that made me hate the episode, but the overall feeling of the season dragged this down slightly.
