Review: Animals “Squirrels Part 1”
Spoilers Below
Squirrels
Two squirrel brothers (Mike and Phil) try to survive after their home collapses. They are aided by another squirrel named “April” as they trek through the remains of the tree bypassing crazy fortunate tellers, corpses, and even bullies.
After a while, the squirrels begin to yearn for food and run into Kurt Vile whom has a closet full of mixed nuts and a new song to play for the guys. Eventually, Kurt tells everyone to leave, and acts kinda like a dick while everyone’s heading out.
It isn’t long before Phil and Mike get into an argument and the two split up, leading us to a ”to be continued…NEXT WEEK!”
Mouse vs Snake
A mouse confronts a snake that’s about to eat it. Fortunately, the mouse makes it through the mouth of the snake without being chomped on, but the stomach acid sets in and that’s how snakes eat mice.
Dogs
A turf war between puppies is settled at a pet store. One of the lifers shows up and settles the deal and now we’ve got a tongue orgy among all of the pups.
Our Take
You guys MAY know that I usually complain about the sub plots for this show, but in this week’s case, they were pretty awesome. The snake and the mouse bit reminded me of a similar bit that Fish Hooks used to do at the end of every episode, but I think the end result for the mouse this week was a bit funnier. “Dogs” was by far the best sub plot of all time as it featured a reunion of sorts of one of my favorite 90s sitcoms of all-time, that being The Wayans Bros. Shawn, Marlon, AND Witherspoon? You had me at hello, Mike and Phil.
“Squirrels” is where I kind of have an issue. If you have a show where you insert sub plots, why wouldn’t you take those out and just give us one big “Squirrels” episode? Clearly there would be enough time for one whole “Squirrels” and then just take the sub plots and make that another whole episode. Splitting up the meat and potatoes over two episodes when you have sub plots in between is a device often used in the animated series comic books ala Rick and Morty, Regular Show, etc, and I don’t think it works here. Fortunately, Shawn and Marlon save the day…
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
