English Dub Review: Tonikawa: Over The Moon For You “Marriage”

Overview

The story primarily follows a guy named Nasa Yuzaki who is lying on the street bleeding. During the time he believes he is going to die, he recalls his life, remembering how he was ridiculed for his unusual name (Yes as a running joke he was named after the Space program) and how he devoted his life to studying, wanting to attend an elite school. But before he was set to take the entrance exam, he was hit by a truck when he crossed the street trying to speak to a girl named Tsukasa Tsukuyomi. However, Nasa survives due to her intervention.

After regaining consciousness, Nasa chases after Tsukasa wanting to go out with her as his way of saying “thank you” for saving his life, and Tsukasa agrees on the oddly specific condition that they both get married when they are old enough. After getting discharged from the hospital, he takes the entrance exam the following year, but decided to work instead of attending high school hoping to meet Tsukasa again. Shortly after turning 18, Tsukasa just so happens to show up at his apartment…

Our Take

From what I’ve read of manga, I can say it’s at least faithful to the source material. Even if their relationship comes across as ridiculously immediate, you surprisingly can’t help but feel the chemistry between the two leads with Zach Aguilar of Jojo and One Punch Man fame voicing Nasa, while the female lead Tsukasa is voiced by Lauren Landa who also had a decent track record in English dub voice acting and videogames.

The show itself also has a fate theme going on with Nasa meeting Tsukasa like that. It’s like they were destined to meet each other. While the relationship is moving fast, I think it’s suited for this series given the premise. It’s also nice to have a couple be together from the start and progressively see their growth as opposed to the unrequited love, will they?/won’t they? playing games, running around in circles bullshit that’s infamously plagued anime in the past (Even Black Clover and Inuyasha were guilty of this to the Nth-degree).

Overall, a great start to what feels like the anime equivalent to “90 Day Fiance” minus the whole “Fiance” aspect.
