English Dub Review: The World Ends with You The Animation “CAT”

Overview

There are no new missions, and it’s making Neku nervous. Joshua, however, has his own agenda, and he wants Neku to lend him a hand. When the pair reunite with Hanekoma, a chance remark sparks a memory in Neku…

Our Take

The game master sure is plotting something big since he ain’t giving any missions as far as I can tell. Also, Joshua is a pretty mysterious dude though, I’m still not comfortable with him. Everything he does seems motivated by some underhanded goal and you always get the feeling that he comes out on top, even when Neku manages to force his hand. Based on an observation, he knows more than he’s telling Neku snd since he’s fully aware that Neku is the kind of character that needs to be forced to go places, it makes sense that Joshua has to send Neku a fake mission to get to where they need to go.

I also liked the weather effects & scenery changes within this episode. Upon research, the original game never shows any nighttime or even a change in weather, this was interesting and I had to note of it. At the very least, this episode brought some much-needed levity into the proceedings with a particularly out-of-place but comical line involving a microphone.

Overall, a passable episode.  However, the structure was a bit messy. It just kinda felt like stuff’s just happening for the sake of happening, rather than it being a natural progression. And the twist at the end reveals that Neku remembers something big about Joshua. And it’s clear that whatever this big reveal tells Neku (and by extension the audience), he’ll have a hard time trusting his partner. Not that Joshua was ever a very trustworthy fucker in the first place…
