English Dub Review: The Silver Guardian “Suigin’s Chance Encounter With His Grandfather!”

Take a chance.

A quick intro explains that a goddess created the world long ago. But to spawn life, she gave her own and then went into an eternal slumber in a tomb. It’s a creation myth passed down for years.

Then The Silver Guardian cuts to Suigin along with the the twoorb-like creatures Twin Star. Suigin is challenged to save a tomb from the intruders who have besieged it. As it turns out, the villainous Phoebe and her minions infiltrated the Grave Buster game.

Suigin does remember his grandfather, Yuuki Riku finally. Moreover, the recognizable red scarf that Suigin wears turns out to be from his grandfather. This episode feels like a decided step down from its predecessor in “Suigin Pledges Himself to Riku Rei!” It’s pretty disjointed and tries unsuccessfully to bounce between several plot lines. There’s little momentum compared to “Suigin Pledges Himself to Riku Rei!”

Instead, “Suigin’s Chance Encounter with His Grandfather!” relies on high octane animation with pulsing music. I think sticking to fewer concurrent storylines per episode could foster a better sense of cohesion.

I’m eager to learn more about the tomb, the mechanism with which Suigin was sucked into Grave Buster, and how Yuuki came to be involved. Perhaps these answers await. But if this episode is any indication, they probably don’t.

Animation continues to shine. Additionally, Suigin is a likable character. Unfortunately, its lack of focus prevents The Silver Guardian from winning the gold.
