English Dub Review: The Day I Became a God “The Day of the Melody”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

We finally get an intro which is fun, energetic and sets the tone for the potential character’s we’ll meet for the rest of this series, but picking up from the absurdity of the previous episode, Youta now has a weird girl claiming to be a God and calling herself “Odin” as a roommate who claims to have prediction powers which are hit or miss at this point. And to further adding to the hijinx, when introduced to Youta’s family, Odin even slips out that her full name to be “Hina Sato” but her Youta remains puzzled at how and why his parents even wanted to take her with the only vague excuse that she’s related to them in some way which isn’t clarified properly…

Our Take

I can already see that the story is way too reliant on comedy for it to get through, quite the risky move since it is a hit or miss with comedy and almost takes you out of the lingering plot of the world supposedly ending as there’s just a small reminder after the credits having it count down to “24 days left”.

Also, we meet Youta’s Sister Sora who launches a movie-making scheme with Hina to help Youta pursue his goal of getting the hook-up with his longtime crush, despite not working out the last time. Some jokes do work as the Movie scenes even go as far as to parody/reference iconic Hollywood movies and the anime hilariously isn’t subtle about it including a decent parody of the Stallone classic, “Rocky”. What’s also the highlight is a piano scene, with some beautifully emotional compositions that easily stole the show for me, at least until a very particular cliffhanger near the end.

Overall a passable episode with some humorous moments and surprisingly emotional music. Jun Maeda’s influence is still going strong.
