English Dub Review: SSSS. Dynazenon “What is a Traitor?”
Overview:
Mini showdown with the Kaiju Eugenicists and Gauma. He used to work with them and apparently died 5,000 years ago. He has been reborn in the modern age and the Eugenicists consider him a traitor. Yume gets the info of someone who knew her sister and it turns out Koyomi was a schoolmate of Yomogi’s boss. Juuga the leader of the Kaiju Eugenicists has a chat with Yomogi. Another kaiju gets dominated and a battle ensues.
Our Take:
You know… for being over 5,000 years old and dying once Gauma doesn’t look half bad. Now the dark circles under his eyes kind of make sense. There are still plenty of questions left unanswered about Gauma though. He is fighting to meet someone and that someone is a woman so Yomogi and Yume assume it’s love. I mean so do I but Gauma doesn’t really seem the type. Either way, I am interested to unwrap the mysteries involving him as the season progresses.
Another interesting surprise was finding out that Koyomi went to school with Yomogi’s boss. There was a hint of romantic interest but she says she’s married. Something tells me that might not be accurate or she isn’t any more or something but I guess we will find out eventually. This was the closest we have gotten so far to some back story for Koyomi and by proxy his cousin, it was an interesting tease so I hope they can deliver.
Meanwhile, Yume and Yomogi seem to be getting along well and she even asks him to join her to meet with the music department teacher. She is hoping to find some info about her sister since she was in the chorus before she died. I feel like a broken record because this show has set up a few mysteries that all seem really interesting and the payoff could be really awesome. I have a feeling that Yume’s sister’s death is somehow related to kaiju stuff but that is just a theory of mine.
Since Gauma is over 5,000 years old I am wondering if ALL of the Kaiju Eugenicists are as old. With one form of Dynazenon looking like a Tyrannosaurus Rex I have a feeling dinosaurs or something fossil-related is involved with all this kaiju stuff. Just another mystery this show decided to throw our way. If they can pull off some twists the way SSSS. Gridman did then we are in for a treat.
In the fight this week we got more CGI than the previous two episodes. I normally don’t like that much CGI in anime but Studio Trigger has gotten into a groove with it. You can definitely notice when it’s CG but it is really well done and the fights have all been a joy to watch so far.
SSSS. Dynazenon is shaping up to be a fun ride with a little bit of something for everyone. I can’t wait to see where all these mysteries go. I am a little worried because with this many dangling threads I don’t know if they can all be resolved in the short episode count. If anyone can do it though, Studio Trigger can.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
