English Dub Review: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind:“The Mystery of Emperor Crimson”

(Possible Spoilers Below)

As Bruno continues to have the fight of his life to protect Trish, We cut back to the boat where Giorno and his teammates wait for Bruno’s return, while Giorno tracks their mysterious and elusive boss by following the small tracking device Bruno planted on him. But it’s here when Giorno realizes that the group is experiencing Emperor Crimson’s ability to erase/skip time, with none of them remembering specific events which had happened in between waiting on the boat, which causes Giorno rush to find Bruno.

Meanwhile, despite Bruno getting a massive wound to the Abdomen, he amazingly continues to fight. But we do get a more detailed look at the mechanics of how Emperor Crimson’s Time erasing powers work, in which Crimson proceeds to effortlessly use to avoid any possible danger which results in him having an unfair advantage against Bruno. But just as Bruno’s now Ex-Boss is about to kill Trish, he is suddenly encased within the Tracking device/trap that was given life by Giorno’s Stand powers in a pretty badass and clever scene that manages to momentarily distract Crimson.

This, fortunately, gives Bruno enough time to comprehend the gist of Emperor Crimson’s Stand powers and tries to avoid him by tricking Emperor Crimson into letting him create an exit to the ceiling and both him and Trish escape to meet Giorno. Confusion ensues as Giorno realizes something’s a bit off about Bruno after using his Stand Powers to heal him after from his mortal wounds, but before Emperor Crimson can reach Giorno and Bruno. Their still mysterious boss decides to cut his losses as he cannot fight them all without risking his anonymity and lets them escape with Trish. Out of the church, Bruno explains to everyone in his team about their boss’s true sinister intentions of bringing Trish to him but offers the team the chance to join him in his cause against fighting the Boss knowing they’ll all be potential targets by their own Mafia. The team is at first frightened, but they gather the resolve to follow their leader, with the exception of Fugo who chooses to Stay for disagreeing with Bruno’s decision, but the episode ends when one of the Passione operatives named “Squalo” receives the order to hunt Bruno and Giorno’s gang and are to be taken “Dead or Alive”.

Our Take

WOW! What an episode, I liked the in-depth explanation about how Emperor Crimson Time erasing powers which in a nutshell can fast forward and edit/skip time to a specific degree well as the way it affects everything else around it which was carefully well animated. Looks like Bruno managed to get out of there alive for now, but you never know with Jojo… It’s sad that Fugo didn’t follow them but Bucciarati survived and managed to recover Trish, that’s all that matters.

I get Fugo’s reasons but still, it’s very strange for him to just abandon his team and Bruno the way he did, I guess it’s a goodbye? Reportedly the departure of Fugo from the group has always been a kind of controversial plot turn by a lot of fans who followed the Manga. Since it’s supposedly the last time anyone sees Fugo in the story. I still think his character deserved better and I honestly feel like it was a strange decision Jojo Creator Hikohiro Araki made that consequently prevented potential character development he could have had, yet the way the anime handles it feels like a more plausible excuse that he’d be too dependent on the Mafia to survive.

Being invested with a character like Bruno for as long as we have, it helped that we the audience cared about Bruno even at his worst, and that weird shit from the aftermath of Giorno healing him could have potential consequences later on. But I think what struck a chord with me the most was the ending with Narancia making the decision and swimming over to their boat was really emotional. Now that they have become traitors to their own Mafia Branch, new challenges will await them, but who knows if any of them will survive.
