English Dub Review: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind: “King of Kings”

Overview (Spoilers Below)
As Diavolo attempts to grab the arrow with his Emperor Crimson Stand, Bruno destroys Chariot Requiem, returning everybody’s souls to their respective bodies. However, this is not without consequences as Bruno’s soul begins to ascend to the heavens due to already being sort-of dead before this all happened. Before departing, Bruno explains how Giorno affected his life for the better and entrusts to him the end of their mission which in the process leaves Giorno with the Arrow. Diavolo contemplates escaping after seeing Giorno with the arrow, but when Trish reveals her father’s intention to flee, he has a change of heart, believing he is entitled to be King and that he should have no reason to run away.

Giorno then proceeds to pierce Golden Wind with the arrow, which apparently begins to damage Golden Wind and it’s here when things take an unexpected direction when Diavolo takes advantage of this and attacks Giorno to reclaim the arrow, shattering Golden Wind’s face. However, Diavolo’s attack doesn’t harm Giorno; instead, Golden Wind absorbs the arrow into its body and sheds its skin like a shell, revealing its new form as “Golden Wind Requiem”(Or “GWR” for short).

After Diavolo uses his “Eulogy” power to ensure he’ll be one step ahead of Giorno, Diavolo foresees it and doesn’t see any real change. Considering Emperor Crimson to still be superior, Diavolo erases time. Foreseeing himself punching through Giorno, Diavolo is elated but his joy is crushed as he sees that time is rewinding back and that his time erasure is being undone with the big reveal that Giorno’s new Stand Powers have the ability to nullify Diavolo’s attack, by rewinding time to the point of Emperor Crimson’s activation thereby preventing his desired future of killing Giorno from becoming a reality. With Diavolo confused and unable to fight back, The episode ends with Giorno’s crowning moment of awesome.

Our Take

Well, a lot happened in this episode. Everyone returned to their bodies it seems. The arrow went in Giorno and gave him quite a power boost. Part of me feels a small sense of finality in the proceedings, but still, considering we’re talking about Diavolo, there might be something more in the next two episodes. Compared to the recent passings of Abbachio, Narancia, and Doppio, this felt like a more respectable sendoff to the most proactive supporting character within Golden Wind itself, Bruno Bucciarati. While Giorno is the primary protagonist, it felt like most of Bruno’s impulsive decisions (such as protecting Trish from her own father) became the impetus for the rest of the plot moving forward, as both he and Giorno still shared the common goal of cleaning up the corruption of their own Mafia branch from the inside.

In terms of animation, The entire first half was absolutely stunning and the animation was trippy as hell for GWR, especially that ability showcase. And the way it trolled Diavolo was both funny and frightening because of how easy it was to surpass Emperor Crimson’s powers with such minimal effort, and I’m sure the fight itself has a deeper meaning & symbolism to all of it.

I’m shocked that with two episodes left, this still isn’t even the climax of the series so I’m incredibly hyped!
