English Dub Review: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind “Emperor Crimson vs. Metallic”

(Possible Spoilers Below)

Through their hilariously unusual method of communication between their duo personalities, the Passione Boss tells Doppio to use a technique his Emperor Crimson Stand also has called “Eulogy” to predict Risotto’s movements. This results in Doppio seeing his first disturbing future vision involving a pair of scissors. Unable to avoid this from happening, Doppio carefully counters this in one of the most wince-worthy, yet badass scenes in recent memory. Next, Doppio sees a vision of losing his right foot and, despite the boss advising him to run away, Doppio knows how unwise that is right now and after sensing Risotto’s direction, He counters another attack of his and quickly deduces That Risotto’s Stand powers give him the ability to transform the iron nutrients in people’s bodies into metallic objects, as well as the ability invisibly cloak himself with iron particles found in the sand.

Of course there are moments of levity that balance things out with the hilarious method of how the Boss and Doppio interact which is just comedy gold at this point, even during suspenseful moments like this. Of course Doppio once again uses the “Eulogy” power to his advantage and manages to injure Risotto. Now aware of Doppio’s precognitive abilities, and having guessed that Doppio and the Boss are split personalities. Of course the writers of this had to be abrupt with the proceedings by inserting a random flashback with the now mostly-dead Hitman Team. While the flashback itself feels like an attempt to chew a little more time for the episode, I think it’s purpose was to establish Risotto’s leadership skills as he knew that if his own team didn’t immediately lay low, they’d all be murdered if they just impulsively attacked their mysterious boss directly. And keep in mind, this was after their first failed attempt to uncover their Boss’s identity.

Risotto now undeterred to kill and dethrone his boss once and for all, unleashes a series of iron-based attacks including some wince-worthy internal ones. And since Iron is supposed to be a prevalent part of the human bloodstream and vital to certain organs in the body, you’d think Risotto would’ve set his sights on internally piercing any of his vital organs and instantly killing Doppio. But instead, it only weakens his ass which results in both reduced iron in his body and his body’s ability to absorb oxygen, leaving him short of breath. And just as Risotto declares premature victory while putting the pieces together about Doppio’s second personality. The episode ends when it turns out that the boss carefully orchestrated a clever plan that indirectly gives him the upper-hand against Risotto once and for all while using his anemia-related injuries to hide from the Lil Bomber Stand. Outplayed, Risotto collapses.

Our Take

Holy Fuck! Nearly everything about this episode was so damn good. The art, the animation, and the suspense-fueled soundtrack were fantastic in terms of really setting the mood of this fight. Almost Everything about it was insane and brutal but on a thematic level. This episode and the boss himself sells the weight and irony of the situation. In retrospect, The Boss arguably should have died, Risotto should have won, And if certain events didn’t play out involving a very specific member of Bruno’s team, it could’ve been a much shorter story.

Also major props to the David Production Animation Team for giving more depth to Rissoto so his Hitman Team actually felt like a real group of characters and didn’t reduce them to just being bad guys of the week that Bruno’s team encountered. There was a real build-up mostly to show Rissoto being the leader and the mechanics of his Stand Powers in-combination with seeing them in action made him so much more interesting, And it felt like a real landmark in the plot that he’s been taken out. And to be fair, Bruno’s group would probably still had to kill Risotto either way.

As of right now, the yet to be named unknown boss of the Passione Mafia Branch has shown to be not only psychotic but also cunning, calculating, and a formidable villain. And with the clever way of how he took out Risotto while almost being killed showed him to be an evil genius at work. And if Bruno, Giorno, and the rest of their team is going up against him in future episodes of this arc, we can fully expect some shit about to get real!
