English Dub Review: Dr. Stone Special Episode “Ryusui”

Overview:

A special episode fills the gap between seasons two and three of Dr. Stone. Ryusui is the name of the newest addition to Senku’s Kingdom of Science.

Our Take:

Senku and the gang intend to sail to South America. Or at least that’s where it looks like they’re going. They have decided on building a ship but every ship needs a captain, right? So with the help of Minami, they find their guy. Ryusui Nanami was the son of a CEO so he was not quite what you would think for a captain. But he quickly proves he knows his way around a ship and seafaring conditions. If only his attitude wasn’t complete garbage…

But Senku doesn’t choose people based on personality but their aptitude and it has gone well so far! Honestly, I really like Ryusui and this episode was fantastic. It’s rare for a special episode to be canonical. I was expecting this to be a recap or something like that but I was very pleasantly surprised. If you’re like me and haven’t watched Dr. Stone since season one then you might be a little lost but one thing I can promise you is that it will definitely make you want to catch up. I truly forgot how awesome this show is.

Clifford Chapin voices Ryusui (which might be why I like him so much) and man does he kill it. When he started talking I wasn’t even surprised I just thought “Yup, that is a Clifford character to a T” and I have a feeling most of you will agree. Ryusui getting a tricorn sailor’s hat definitely helps me like him as well.

Not only does this episode prime you for the season but it introduces a new character. Senku and his kingdom use science to do some pretty impressive and amazing things that I don’t want to spoil here. So, please just do me a favor and make sure you watch this. Especially if you are going to watch the new season, I can’t say with absolute certainty but something tells me that this special will be required viewing.
