English Dub Review: Black Summoner: “A Secret Shared with the Guild, and a Slave Girl”

Overview: Kelvin (Van Barr Jr.) meets the headmaster of the adventurer’s guild, Leo (Kenny James), and later, adds a new member to bolster his group in Efil (Bev Mageto).

Our Take: The secret in question that the episode title mentions manages to be an interesting development for Kelvin and the new world he now finds himself in. The guild headmaster, Leo, piques interest as a mysterious new character in him being more than meets the eye with high level skills, like Kelvin’s appraisal. However, more interestingly are the huge exposition bombs he drops along with him wanting Kelvin to protect him and the guild. With more heroes rampant in the world and summoned to battle the demon lord, it will be interesting how Kelvin inevitably gets involved and to what extent considering he likes to fly under the radar. However, the prospect of him interacting with others from his original world is intriguing in how their viewpoints will differ or relate to one another based on Kelvin and the other heroes’ own respective ideology.

The “Slave Girl” aspect of the episode comes in the latter half and deals with a new member joining Kelvin’s party in elf who Kelvin saw earlier when he arrived in town, Efil. It’s great to see Kelvin continuing to be smart and understand something as fundamental as strength in numbers in deciding to recruit a new member. Efil very much seems to be the damsel in distress archetype. With that said, she is sweet and endearing, making her very personable. This is just the beginning to her character, so, hopefully, she will be fleshed out more and with Kelvin being an honorable guiding hand in her own free will, that is looking increasingly likely. Her being cured of her fiery curse by Kelvin is heartfelt in her devotion to him. Also her sheer happiness in being able to touch others is wholesome, like that of Claire. It is also nice seeing her getting to put on real clothes like a maid outfit (nice pick, Claire) or eating a warm home-cooked meal.

With Efil meeting the rest of the crew, it will be fun to see what her chemistry is like with the rest of the gang, especially Melfina, who is competing for Kelvin’s heart. It is a shame we only get a montage, narrated by Kelvin, discussing her chatting with Gerard, Clotho and Melfina and did not get anything more substantial. Although, hopefully that won’t be all we are relegated to and we will get more in-depth interactions and relationships amongst the group later on. As the ending teases, just as Efil arrives, so too does another new party member with her being in peril and about to be introduced.
