BUBBLE CAN Review: Night Sweats “Murder”

Night Sweats has truly become a staple of the Adult Swim lineup in Canada. Never afraid to bring new things to the table, the show has offered us a variety of different cartoons from creators who are trying to make a name for themselves in the industry. You really get a sense of that in each cartoon. They don’t tend to follow a formula, they take creative approaches and it doesn’t always work out, but at least you know you’re getting something from a fresh perspective. So how was this episode of Night Sweats? Read on to find out!

In ““Murder”” Chris and Bart find a dead body on set and investigate CSI style. More animated shorts from “When in Rome”, “World Doctors”, “Parenthesis”, and “Terrificland”.

The live action segments in this episode were really fun to watch. Usually we see Chris and Bart on the hunt for cash, trying a variety of methods to earn a little on the side. This time we see them trying to solve a murder mystery. It actually had a story to it. They still did a lot of their nonsensical stuff, but even the tiniest bit of mystery and suspense added another layer to this episode.

“When in Rome” is a spinoff of Don’t Feed the Humans. We meet Primus back in Ancient Rome, fighting as a gladiator. But an injury occurs and he’s forced to retire. Now he’s on a search to find something to do with his life. The short worked for me. It was funny, and it felt normal. This odd character that we’ve come to know on Don’t Feed the Humans suddenly being placed in a context where he makes sense. Usually he is outlandish, but in this setting and world, we see why he acts that way.

“World Doctors” this week was fun. There isn’t very much to say about it. It was funny, well written, crazy as usual. If you’ve liked previous installments, this one shouldn’t be any different.

“Parenthesis” was an interesting short. From this short alone, I’m not exactly sure what it’s going to be, but this one was funny. There are some great characters here and I see the potential to be something fun. I’m not totally sold on it yet, because I’m not entirely sure what it’s supposed to be, but I think this could be fun.

Finally there was another installment of “Terrificland”. The short that sort of feels like a cross between Adventure Time and Rick and Morty. If you like either of those shows, you’ll probably get a kick out of this cartoon. Crude humor set in a magical world.

Overall, I enjoyed most of this episode. The live action segments were fun and most of the cartoons were as well. Night Sweats has become a show I look forward to every week because it’s a surprise bag. You never really know what you’re going to get with it. Sometimes they give us some duds, but often times you’ll get something great. That’s what you can expect with Night Sweats each week.
