Blu-Ray Review: Rick and Morty Season 3

The home release provides enough behind-the-scenes content for die-hard Roiland/Harmon fans and animation geeks, but not enough bonus content for fans of the show.

The third season of Adult Swim hit Rick and Morty was released on May 15th, 2018 and touts a load of great features to entice their mostly millennial, stream-happy audience to purchase the physical copy. Copies purchased new also receive a code for downloading a digital HD version.

The packaging for the DVD is all about Pickle Rick. A fantastic choice, as it was the episode that created the most buzz when it aired. Pickle Rick on the box, Pickle Rick on the disc, and Pickle Rick in the very minimal insert. For packaging, it’s clear simplicity was the goal.

The release itself is one disc, which contains the entire third season. For each episode, there are animatics (think storyboard, unfinished type animation with voices), commentary with cast and crew, and a ‘behind the episode’ segment that is a couple minutes long.

There is also a two-part ‘Origins of Rick and Morty’ special, which highlights Justin Roiland’s early career and how it intersected with Dan Harmon’s to create the show we all love today. The parts are several minutes long and contain some early work of Roiland’s that is a must-see for his dedicated fans.

The Home Release didn’t include any extra scenes or an animated menu. While the documentary style content is interesting, and the animatics are novel, casual fans of the show might be disappointed there is no additional Rick and Morty action in this release.

A copy of the new release runs about $18, and as of the date this review was published, Season Three episodes can be streamed on Hulu. If you’re thinking about purchasing it on Amazon, definitely pick up the Blu-Ray, as it’s $1 less than the Prime Video version, and it includes a digital copy.
