“Big Mouth” Panel Recap at NYCC 2019

Spoilers for season three below!

“How are you motherfuckers feeling tonight?” the distinct voice of Maury the Hormone Monster comes over the intercom, driving a sea of excited Big Mouth fans wild. “I’m sorry, my ears are filled with jizz — I can’t hear you. How are you feeling tonight?”

Another wave of screams fills the air. An appropriate response to a rather appropriate line of dialogue spoken by a beloved character from Big Mouth — the show that takes all the disgustingly beautiful parts of growing up and personifies them in graphic, over-the-top ways.

“Well right now I’ve got a special treat for you — you are going to see the first episode ever seen of season three, of Big Mouth! It’s not the first episode of the season so god damn it give me a break, I’M TRYING TO GET MY ACT TOGETHER. I WENT OUT IN CHELSEA LAST NIGHT AND HAD A FUCKIN’ NIIIIGHT. I know this is all very confusing, but I want you to enjoy an episode about a trip to Florida, from season three of Big Mouth.”

What followed was the anticipated incest episode of Big Mouth — something that was alluded to in the season three Netflix trailer. In this episode, Nick accompanies Andrew on his family’s Spring Break trip to Florida, where he celebrates Passover with Andrew’s Floridian relatives. However, trouble stews when Andrew’s cousin Cheryl (who goes by “Cherry”) makes a few Passover passes at him. Meanwhile, Nick gets into some Florida-brand shenanigans, Jay experiences true familial love while temporarily living with Nick’s parents, and Andrew’s mother, Barbara, meets a frightening new face — the Menopause Banshee.

After the episode ended, Nick Kroll (voice of Nick Birch) and Andrew Goldberg (co-creator) reminisced on long family road trips they’d been on as kids. Inspiration for the show comes easy to the pair, as they’ve been best friends in real life “since the first grade.” The semi-autobiographical re-tellings of Big Mouth give a ton of perspective into the lives of the cast, as they confirm a large portion of the stories depicted were their own real-life experiences.

Except for the whole incest thing, which they highlighted did not happen to any of them.

They went over everything from jizzing in their pants at a school dance (a true story from Andrew Goldberg) to being pantsed in front of their crushes (a true story from Nick Kroll, minus the zip-line.) As Jessi Klein laughs about her chronic teen masturbation, an exclusive picture of Jessi’s character, Jessi, riding horses with own vagina and Connie the Hormone Monstress appears onscreen.

A few juicy details were slipped, such as Matthew’s romance with Aiden — who first appeared in the Valentine’s Day special — being continued in the new season, as well as Nick’s upcoming obsession with his phone, who is personified by the name “Cellsi” (played by Chelsea Peretti), an episode about Adderall addiction, and, of course, an episode where the boys rank the girls (something that Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg recall doing “before they knew better.”)

They also showed some behind-the-scenes footage of the Queer Eye cast recording for their season three appearance — where Jonathan Van Ness and Karamo Brown hilariously “crossed the line.” “The two of them improvising are dirtier than anything we’ve ever even thought of,” Andrew Goldberg recalls.

The cast then rolled a clip from an upcoming episode (which they referred to as “Super Mouth”) wherein all the characters have superpowers. There’s an apparent conflict between Nick and Andrew, which is portrayed through a “Marvel-movie” fight. Matthew becomes “The Harmonizer” — with a supersonic vocal ability. Jay, disgustingly enough, becomes “The Cum Bender,” with a self-explanatory name. Lola is now part bull, and goes by the name “Bull-lola.” Andrew dubs himself “Big Dick Boy” because of his ability to super-grow in size. This is all at the expense of Andrew, whose power is fart-based invisibility.

Throughout the panel, fans ask their questions, but one early question stuck out: “Are we going back to Hormone World?”

“That is the plan,” Nick Kroll initially replied. A coy response, considering that the finale of the panel was the reveal of Human Resources — the Big Mouth spin-off, complete with its own teaser. “The show is going to be called Human Resources, and it’s about the monsters and the creatures and everything that manages people,” Kroll explains. “We’re going to make it after we make season five of Big Mouth, and we are incredibly excited to tell a lot of different kinds of stories, not just about puberty, but all the stories of life.”

As the panel neared its end, Kroll thanked the fans for their support of Big Mouth, and for their hand in creating future projects such as Human Resources.
