Review: Adventure Time “Angel Face” (S7Ep17)

It’s been a while since I’ve sat down and watched Adventure Time, but suffice it to say that fans of the show can expect the same kind of insanity every week from this long-running Cartoon Network staple. Deep in the 7th season, we’re presented with “Angel Face”, a BMO heavy episode where he goes on an adventure with Jake as his horse against a villain of his own concoction, played by Finn.

The episode starts with BMO making breakfast with smiling, sentient ingredients– something Jake is excited to call “sentient sammiches”. Jake and BMO come to an agreement that Jake will receive one sammich per hour as long as he agrees to be BMO’s horse, with a 6 hour minimum. There is more strangeness from there, as BMO whispers to Jake that he is going to mount him, and Jake comments that the sammiches “taste alive”. Then, there’s a song about being a robot cowboy, a feline villain in addition to Finn.. basically, enough weird hi-jinks to please any AdTi fan.

It was rather amusing to see BMO bribe Jake and Finn to take part in his quest in a little cardboard and popsicle stick world that he set up- a very interesting premise. He had little wanted posters drawn up, and there was definitely no lack of western scenery.

After not watching Adventure Time for so long, it hasn’t necessarily lost its steam– and although it’s not my cup of tea, I  can totally understand why the show has lasted so long. There are plenty of colors and cute, kawaii adventures for the kids, and some really adult humor that the kids won’t even fully understand.
