English Dub Review: Aoashi “Starting Line”
Overview
Ashito finally gets the promotion to the A team, and he does everything he can to keep up. However, it’s not without its drawbacks…
Our Take
After a four-year wait, Ao Ashi finally returns with its second season, continuing Yugo Kobayashi’s acclaimed soccer manga under the direction of a new studio, TMS Entertainment, taking over from Production I.G. Despite the change, the premiere feels like a welcome return to form, bringing back the series’ grounded approach to football, engaging characters, and competitive spirit. 10-FEET’s opening theme also brings some energetic sports anthem vibes to the table.
With Aoi and his fellow former B-team players facing a new chapter at Esperion, the premiere effectively showcases the significant gap in skill, speed, and coordination between the A and B teams. The practice session highlights Aoi’s spatial awareness and determination to improve, while the returning cast adds to the excitement. The animation is generally decent, though some rough drawings stand out, and while Ai Higuchi’s ending song is soothing, its mostly static visuals leave something to be desired.
Overall, Ao Ashi delivers a solid season premiere that captures what made the first season so enjoyable. Aoi’s journey toward becoming a better player remains compelling, and seeing him adapt to these new challenges makes for an exciting start. Although the production could use a little polish, the series retains its heart and realistic approach to football. After four long years, it feels great to have this sports anime back, and there’s plenty of potential for what comes next.
