Review: Grimsburg “Zast if Zus”

In this apocalyptic parody, a ruggedly handsome, well-dressed stranger passes through Grimsburg and infects the town with a Zaddy virus.

Our Take

The third season of Grimsburg is upon us and with it we get a cold open of my favorite voice actor of all time, John Viener, giving a rundown when animated sitcoms would do a parody of a popular movie or TV show. That said, the show definitely knows that more often than not Grimsburg has done numerous pop culture jokes and parodies over the course of it’s run on FOX and they can be hit or miss. This week goes deep into a The Last of Us parody but really it’s mostly commentary on social media comments likely found on Twitter or Reddit that comes out for that series and then juxtaposed in a not great script.

We also get parodies of really famous people that don’t guest stars as themselves which is fine but Viener has to get on the mic and be used more in this capacity as that is a wasted talent that could do a much funnier take on some of these characters than what we are getting right now. Quite frankly John could pull off being the weekly villain of Grimsburg against Jon Hamm and it would work because of how good he is and instead we are left with a far too safe animated comedy with paint-by-number gags and no real heart anywhere.
