English Dub Review: Bungo Stray Dogs Wan! “Clash! At a Dangerous Field Day!”
Overview
The Detective Agency and Port Mafia engage in some friendly competition at a joint field day.
Our Take
Picking up from the previous episode, Bungo Stray Dogs Wan! turns its attention to a chaotic sports festival between the Armed Detective Agency and Port Mafia. What starts as an attempt to foster friendly competition quickly becomes the usual rivalry-fueled madness, with everyone using their abilities to gain an advantage. The chibi-style characters, ridiculous pairings, and over-the-top reactions make even the simplest sporting events entertaining, especially when the competition culminates in an unexpected dance battle.
The real highlight, though, is easily the dance sequence, which features surprisingly impressive animation and some slick moves from Karl. Even the Port Mafia gets in on the fun, with Chuuya using his gravity ability to pull off the iconic Michael Jackson lean. The episode also continues the adorable progression of its ending theme, giving characters like Higuchi, Akutagawa, Gin, and Tachihara some fun moments. It’s a silly episode through and through, but seeing everyone let loose and watching the raccoon steal the show makes it hard not to enjoy.
Overall, this is essentially one long comedic field-day montage, relying more on quick gags and character interactions than any substantial story. While that makes it feel less structured than some previous episodes, fans familiar with the cast will get plenty of mileage out of the rivalries, pairings, and ridiculous use of abilities. And with that unexpectedly elaborate dance sequence stealing the spotlight, this episode may have accidentally created the next anime meme.
