English Dub Season Review: Mistress Kanan Is Devilishly Easy Season One
Overview:
Kanan is a demon who descends upon the human world with one goal: to feast on the sweetest delicacy of all—young human souls. Disguised as a high schooler, she sets her sights on her first target, an unassuming boy named Youji Kyougi. But just as she prepares to claim her meal, things take a very unexpected turn.
Our Take:
Now, this show was certainly something. This was an ecchi show, no doubt about it, but it wasn’t only ecchi in what it brought to you visually. It seemed like every episode we were learning about someone’s new fetish. Masurao, Kyougi’s childhood friend, seems to be into women, but not only that, she has a bit of a masochistic streak. Whenever Kanan screams at her and hits her, she seems to get more and more aroused. I’m not a fan of love triangles, but that would be a unique one to explore, so I was a bit sad we didn’t get to see more of Masurao, problematic issues aside.
Then you have Kanan’s family, which is almost every single perverted trope rolled into one. The only “normal” one is Kanan’s dad, and even he is a guy who wears a giant costume to hide his childlike appearance for some reason. Lilim, the mother, hates all men for some reason but ends up getting horny for Kyougi. Milch has a giant sister complex but ends up getting horny for Kyougi because she loves to steal things from Kanan to get attention. The other sister, Miel, also has a sister complex, but she gets so turned on by the idea of being cucked by Kyougi that she creates a cuckception in her head where if she steals Kyougi from Kanan, it’s the ultimate cuckoldry.
All of these weirdos make all the other rom-com shenanigans seem normal. I haven’t even mentioned the hobo angel lady or the demon maid who sleeps with Kanan’s teacher all the time. There’s a lot of heart in this show, but holy cow, you will have to get through a whole new barrier of ecchi.
Bradley Gareth has been busy this season. He’s in Classroom of the Elite, and he’s Kyougi in this show. I’ve heard him before, but his two roles this season made me take notice. Corey Pettit as Kanan is the standout star of this show, though. Kanan is so animated and goes on such hilarious angry tirades that Corey had her work cut out for her, and she killed it.
I did not expect a second season of Mistress Kanan is Devilishly Easy, but we’re getting one! I hope that now that we’ve established the horniness and character quirks, we can get more from the cast next season. For a pair that became a couple in the first episode, we got surprisingly little romantic progress from them. Hopefully, the second season solves many of these issues and more. I want to see Masurao try to actually steal Kanan from Kyougi or something.
