Review: The Legend of Vox Machina “One Year Later…” ;Trial By Water” ;”The Coronation”
Overview:
Doty, take this down. I, Taryon Darrington, inventor and bestselling author, have met the most bewildering group of mercenaries in Exandria. A tall, brooding one, a short, angry one, and far too many pointy ears. They seem… promising?
Doty, take this down. Antlers has gone off to do something terribly dangerous involving water. Meanwhile, Short Stuff and Jumbo are poking around places they probably shouldn’t be. I’ve arrived with important news. Doty, underline “important.”
Doty, take this down. We’ve gathered in a mountain village for a ceremony. The food is mediocre, and my fellow adventurers haven’t spoken in a year. Uninvited guests crash the party. Rude. Doty, note that I handled it with grace.
Our Take:
The first thing you might notice after starting this new season is that everyone has been separated for a year. Vex and Percy are in Whitestone, Grog and Pike are in a bar, Vax and Keyleth are continuing on Keyleth’s aramente. Scanlan has yet to be seen, so I look forward to that. We are also introduced to a new character named Taryon Darrington. He’s almost as insufferable as his name.
We’re going to get three episodes weekly, which is a format I’ve come to expect and enjoy. I was slightly disappointed when they did something different for The Mighty Nein. If you love the universe of Critical Role, I think we’re in for a lot of stories in the future. There’s only one more season of The Legend of Vox Machina, but with how popular this universe has gotten, I don’t think we’ll be hurting anytime soon.
I love this series, but I have to admit that this was one of the weaker starts to a season for me. I wasn’t a fan of seeing these characters flounder in peacetime. There’s nothing wrong with that, but the biggest issue for me was the fact that everyone seemed to stop talking to each other. After everything that they’ve been through together, it’s hard for me to believe that they would have so much trouble talking to each other.
I’m happy that the crew of Vox Machina is back, and I look forward to seeing where this plot goes. It was a weak start, but this series has earned good faith from me. I think perhaps we needed this rough start to get things going in the proper direction. I do hope that Taryon is a temporary addition and won’t be in the season the whole time.
