Review: Smiling Friends “Erm, the Boss Finds Love?”
Overview
Mr. Boss of Smiling Friends, Inc. discovers the love of his life.
Our Take
THIS is the hell that is making TV for a company that probably doesn’t give a shit. Here I am watching this hysterical episode of Smiling Friends and thinking “Hmmm, this feels like it should be a Halloween episode” only to find out at the end that the episode IS a Halloween episode. This tells me Smiling Friends was supposed to premiere Fall 2023 because why the hell else would you release a Halloween episode for Memorial Day Weekend? Granted we are a little past ‘Halfway to Halloween” now, but with as much promotion as WB Discovery does here in the United States for Halloween with its portfolio, especially with its paranormal and food-heavy networks, I would’ve even considered holding on to this one to maybe premiere as a special similar to the first season’s ‘Brazil’ special.
“Erm, the Boss Finds Love?” has all of the makings of a classic that I would’ve even pushed for a double-episode for. ANY episode where Mr. Boss is the center of attention is usually in my catalog of favorites for revisits and this one might be the best one of them all if we’re to be honest. In fact, I want a re-airing completely uncensored, do that Adult Swim and MAYBE I’ll get you off the hook at 25%. Back to the review, Smiling Friends continues to show its sophistication with its depiction of Brittney (played supremely well by the ever-talented Erica Lindbeck) and the gag with Charlie’s knife was fantastic and had me on the hook the entire time. Personally thought, if I were the producers, I would’ve animated the knife a different aesthetic to really hook home the inauthentic toy that the guys were planning to use to take on the throws of hell.
Doug Walker makes a humorous guest appearance as a demon slayer and although we don’t necessarily spend a TON of time taking on any new clients (somewhat glossed over in the first act), Smiling Friends sticks the landing in a fantastic Halloween special that didn’t actually air on Halloween.

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
