English Dub Review: Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki “There are some problems a bottom-tier character can’t fix alone”

Overview

Mimimi reminisces about her time in middle school when Hinami’s school defeated her in a basketball game. At school, everyone is worried that Mimimi has been overworking herself following their failed election. When Fumiya expresses his concern to her after school, Mimimi appeals to his nature as a gamer. Later, Fumiya learns how Hinami and Mimimi’s rivalry started…

Our Take

Mimimi clearly takes competitions seriously and having such determination is admirable. But on the other side of the spectrum, it Looks like the bittersweet aftermath of the election clearly brought out some unpleasant memories for her. Considering how she’s been competing with Aoi since middle school. It’s not easy to give up that desire. Given that both were aces in their respective teams back then this only served to reinforce that driving beat Aoi. Always aiming to be the best though is something that’s within Aoi’s nature I guess.

If there are any lessons I can take from this, It’s that you don’t need to be 1st to feel special or superior as long as people recognize that you are putting in the effort. But above all, you as an individual can choose to focus on your own personal growth and be content with it. Sometimes looking up to someone or simply having a friendly rivalry can be beneficial in regards to being the best version of yourself, and in turn, can also inspire other people in a positive way.

Overall, while Mimimi was once again the focus of this storyline. At the end of the day, I want this to focus back on Fumiya’ Tomozaki’s progress as a person. And despite how flawlessly capable this show tries to make Aoi, I personally don’t like the way she treats Fumiya. What’s the point of helping somebody ‘win life’ when her methods come across as belittling, like every part of him is wrong? What is she trying to accomplish? Hopefully, future episodes will answer this…
