Insight: “Family Guy” Producers Say Post “Trump Guy” Interviews About LGBT Humor Taken Out Of Context

By far and away, this past Sunday’s episode of Family Guy has been the best in the show’s young season thus far. In the episode entitled “Disney Reboot” there was a scene featuring Peter telling a focus group that comments made after the airing of “Trump Guy” were taken out of context. The obvious knee-jerk reaction in this day and age is for those few publications that are still around trying their best to appeal to “millennials” thereby checking the pulse of social channels overrun by bots and NPC’s instead of doing any actual fact checking. The result is questioning whether or not the producers are “back tracking” their claims of reeling back the LGBT jokes or if they are just reaffirming their stance.

Clearly, terrible journalism is the crux of the issue here, with Peter clearly going after the Sulkin/Appel interview with TVLine. The obvious claim that those guys are now making is that TVLine must have incorrectly quoted the longtime producers of Family Guy possibly to take advantage of the eventual wave of referral traffic that came along with doing so instead of doing the right thing and fact-checking everything that was said. Of the countless interviews I’ve done, I can’t recall anyone telling me afterward that I incorrectly quoted them…subjects in hindsight might change their views for the purposes of avoiding conflict…but never blatant disregard for the interviewee.

In any event, the “Bri-ida” episode of Family Guy from a couple of weeks ago certainly showcased that in the eyes of comedy, all are created equal. We did a whole piece about sexuality and adult animation, but the important thing to remember here is that jokes, regardless if they are good or bad, they all come from the same place with the hopeful effect in making someone laugh. One of the best in the business at making people laugh is the producers of Family Guy and I think TVLine owes some apologies for bad reporting.

And as a personal note to Family Guy producers, maybe give us a call next time!
