Review: The Great North “Into The Russell-verse /It’s A Beef-derful Life”
Overview
Moon is annoyed when his sleepover plans include a surprise guest: Russell’s younger cousin. The rest of the Tobins basically go insane. Then, Beef risks his life to bring back roadkill moose meat for the town. Aunt Dirt and Jerry prepare to face the apocalypse.
Our Take
We’ll get into a season review next week, but boy did The Great North know how to wrap up a show with one heck of a finale. And while we have no clue if The Great North is officially over for good, the way this week’s final episode wrapped and even titled seems to indicate that the Molyneux sisters were taking this one close to the chest and doing everything they can to give their venerable franchise the send-off it deserved.
The one-hour long season finale is really just two episodic episodes airing back-to-back and not like an actual hour-long episode, in fact, “Into The Russell-verse” is a rather standard-variety episode that features the Tobins getting really sick with the exception of Moon who is trying to save a sleepover that is being commandeered by a competitor. The other side of the hour features a much more grandiose celebration of all things that were The Great North complete with cameos, songs, and a send-off for the Tobins that fans of the show would surely be proud of.
In a shitty week with shitty television featuring shitty violence, The Great North is a reminder that television can be pure, it can be an adventure, and it can very much be great in more ways than one. Clearly this isn’t the end of the Molyneux sisters as the duo can still be found pitching in on Bob’s Burgers and developing their own projects, but I have a feeling people are going to be missing this show for a good long while.
