English Dub Review: Star Blazers “Clockwork Prisoner”

This show takes no prisoners.

Overview (Spoilers Below)

One of the damaged Gamilian androids is brought onto the Yamato, reassembled, and over time builds a kinship with Analyzer, the ship’s own robotic assistant that acts sort of like an R2-D2 but with way more responsibilities. Eventually, the android meets the ship’s “goddess” and then tries to escape but with Analyzer’s help, the ship’s crew is able to destroy the android and retrieve from it something of value.

Our Take

Fans of sci-fi movies like Chappie, Aliens, and Ex Machina are gonna eat up the robot-android relationship, but for my money, the best part of the episode was the absolutely jaw-dropping background designs coupled by the killer soundtrack. I mean, this is the kind of stuff that takes my breath away, especially the final confrontation between Analyzer and the android which was both heartfelt and poignant. Furthermore, the sliced in bits of stories that would accompany the episodes helped really ground the episode, and give the series an aspect that we really hadn’t seen up until this point.
